The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of the former president's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will have a detention review on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
