Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these treatments must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
