Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
